North Canton Memorial Stadium and Soccer Field Evacuated Due To Police Emergency
North Canton, OH (October 3, 2015)
Around 6:30 p.m. this evening, the North Canton Police Department requested the evacuation of North Canton Memorial Stadium and surrounding North Canton City Schools property for the safety of those in attendance. The North Canton Youth Football games in progress and the high school boys soccer games were cancelled.
NCPD Chief Stephan Wilder released a statement explaining his department was contacted by the Ohio State Highway Patrol shortly after 6 p.m. with the news that a stolen vehicle had been pursued exiting I-77 south at the Portage exit. The State Highway Patrol had to discontinue its visual pursuit on Whipple Avenue due to the amount of traffic, however, OnStar continued to track the vehicle to the parking lot by Taft and Hower NE, behind the old Hoover Company warehouse. NCPD contacted NCCS to evacuate the school grounds in that area to maintain a safe environment while the situation was being handled.
A state trooper witnessed a black male in a gray shirt running from the area where the vehicle was found into the surrounding woods behind the Suarez facility (the old Hoover Warehouse). In situations like these, NCPD operates under the assumption that the person could be armed and/or dangerous, however, they cannot confirm there were any weapons on the person.
Police are recommending that anyone who might have information to help them identify the operator of the vehicle contact the Ohio State Highway Patrol at 330-433-6200.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact the Ohio State Highway Patrol at 330-433-6200.
