Vision and Hearing Screenings for 9th and 11th Graders will be conducted throughout the school day during your child’s study hall period or on November 10th and November 17th Vision and Hearing Screening Vision and/or Hearing screenings are required by the Ohio Department of Health for students in preschool, kindergarten, first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh grade and all new students to the district. To ensure the safety of your child we are providing alternate times for your student to have their vision and hearing checked to follow social distancing guidelines and The Ohio Department of Health. Your child may be asked to be screened during a study hall or on an appropriate selected day and time. Please encourage your student to have their glasses or contacts at school every day. Why is it important to have your child’s vision and hearing screened?Children with vision problems do not know the way they see the world is not the way they should be seeing it! Without early detection and treatment, children’s vision problems can lead to permanent vision loss and learning difficulties. Hearing loss in school children may interfere with normal speech and language development and with the ability to learn.Vision screening will consist of one or more of the following based on the age of the student.Distance visual acuity- ability to see objects far awayBinocular vision- how well your child’s eyes work togetherColor vision- the ability to see color How will the results be shared? If your child does not pass the vision or hearing screening, then you will be notified and will receive a specialist referral form. If you have any questions about the school vision and hearing screening program, please call the school health clinic staff. All grade required students will be screened unless parents choose to decline screening with a written request, signed by the parent/guardian and given to the school nurse. Please notify the school nurse if your child is already under the care of a physician for their vision or hearing. If you have any questions or concerns, please email or call me. Seniors and Parents/Guardians - Each year the Guidance Dept. hosts a Financial Aid meeting for our families. One of Kent State Stark's financial aid officers presents this material to our families. This year, we are still running this informative and important meeting - but it will be virtual.
