While all children have gifts and talents, not all children are considered “gifted.” North Canton City Schools understands the need for educational accommodations for those students who demonstrate exceptional cognitive, academic, creative thinking, and or visual/performing arts talent or skills. We are committed to acknowledging and supporting the needs of our gifted and talented students. We recognize their significant achievements in the academics and the arts and provide them with advanced learning opportunities to help them cultivate their interests and continue to achieve at their highest level.
Gifted identification and services begin as early as Kindergarten for North Canton students. Students who qualify for services have access to enriched curriculum in reading and math in K-2. We have a Junior Galaxy Program for students in grade two, and as they advance into grades 3-5, identified students can take part in the Galaxy. Each day, these students learn in an environment where they are encouraged to collaborate with their gifted peers as they develop high-level skills at their own pace in a self-motivated, independent manner.
- In 2014 North Canton City Schools was ranked eighth best in the state of Ohio for the growth of and for the services we offer to our Gifted and Talented students by the Ohio Department of Education.
- In 2016 NCCS was one of 50 out of 608 districts in the state of Ohio that MET the gifted indicator on the state report card.
These services continue as the Discover program for students in grades 6-7 at the North Canton Middle School in addition to enriched language arts and math courses. These same students can move into the Reach program in high school, and may opt to take advantage of the many honors, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes where they also have the opportunity to earn college credit.
