Mrs. Tammy Ledgerwood’s Grade 5 Class in Greentown collaborated via distance learning with Rebecca Creek Elementary in Spring Branch, Texas. Students at each school asked questions of each other and compared and contrasted the school day, weather, geography, wildlife, sports and a variety of other topics.
Distance learning collaborations allow students in North Canton City Schools to experience a “field trip” from their classroom. |

Business Management has been offered at Hoover High School to give students the chance to explore the business world before college. Viking Enterprise is the student run business through this senior-level Business Management Class in association with Junior Achievement. The business is separated into two companies: Division 12 and Viking Ware. Each company elects its own officers, is in charge of their marketing, and sells their own products. Viking Ware is currently selling athletic draw string bags with a Viking-head logo featured on them as well as business card holder. While Division 12 offers Easy Mix Recipe Jars. They feature 5 different cookie and brownie recipes creatively packaged in a reusable plastic jar with a customizable recipe card. These features make it an ideal gift for friends and family that shows you care but also doesn’t bust your bank account.
For more information on either company you can visit their website at: http://www.northcantonschools.org/~vikingent |

Happy Holidays to all in North Canton! As you celebrate with family and friends this holiday season, we would like to share some news that we think is worth celebrating as a community. As most of you know, our school district was honored by the Ohio Department of Education with the highest rating a school district can earn with regard to the Ohio School District Report Card. For the last nine years and since the award has been instituted, the district has earned the highest distinction possible. We are so thankful and proud that our community and its families, along with our students and staff, have been so consistent with their academic results. As we celebrated this latest achievement, we also went a step further. We wanted to know how many other districts have also earned this highest honor over the nine years of this ratings program. Beyond that, we wanted to know how much each of those same districts spent per pupil. In other words, we wanted to rate our “return on investment” with an efficiency rating comparison. We learned that there are 32 school districts of the 614 in Ohio that have earned the highest rating for 9 straight years. That puts us in the top 5% in the state!

The North Canton City Schools grading scale has been adjusted and will be used district-wide during the 2009-2010 school year. The adjustment to the grading scale is a culmination of an extensive study of similar excellent districts as well as post-secondary trends in grading and documentation. The change will benefit our students and level the playing field for college entrance and scholarship opportunities.
The change in the district grading scale is retroactive to the students’ freshman year or beginning high school transcript (students who took Algebra 1 or a world language in their eighth grade year). Minor adjustments to a student’s grade point average and subsequent class rank may occur. If a student previously earned a failing grade in high school, this grade will remain an “F” and the course will need to be retaken for credit.
Academic performance expectations have not been lowered; teachers will still demand high levels of achievement. By aligning the grading scale, students from the North Canton City Schools will be even more competitive in their post-secondary endeavors.

The greeting, “Welcome back!”, has been shared extensively the last couple of weeks as our students and staff have returned to the 2009-2010 school year. The energy, anticipation, and focused efforts have already begun as the “personality” of each course, classroom, and school building is taking shape. It is truly an exciting time in the lives of our students, their families, our staff, and the overall community of North Canton. While this immediate period of time is taking shape, the district is also setting its sights on the future, as well. In the short term, much activity will occur to ready our students and the district for life in the 21st Century. But beyond this current period of time, there is also a need for planning that impacts our more distant future, as well.
