Hoover High School is excited to announce a pilot program allowing students to bring their own technology for use in school. Bring Your Own Device, sometimes referred to as BYOD, will begin on Monday, January 30, 2012. The length of the pilot program depends on students ability to follow guidelines and policy for use of their technology at school and our success of adapting instruction in the classroom. This Bring You Own Device program opens the door for changes in classroom instruction. The most noticeable change will be the amount of technology students will have access to on a daily basis as well as opening up new and exciting learning opportunities. Instruction may include media rich resources, cutting edge information, technology assisted instruction and infusion of 21st century technology skills. Additionally, BYOD provides other advantages including:
- Students will have access to their technology regardless of where you are. You can work on assignments anytime, anywhere.
- The learning curve is minimized because you will be using a device with which you are most familiar.
- BYOD will help students recognize the responsible use of technology through mentoring by staff and other students.
We have also developed a website where BYOD resources and information may be accessed. This website is a work in progress and will grow with time. Visit byod.northcantonschools.org throughout the semester to find updated information and our collection of technology resources that enhance BYOD. On our BYOD website are two documents which will help explain this program. The first document titled " BYOD - Parent Guidelines" is written in a "frequently asked question" format. The guidelines will help answer many of the questions you may have about your son or daughter bringing their devices to school. The second document titled " BYOD - HHS Student Conduct Code" is the revised section of our Student Code of Conduct pertaining to electronic devices. This document helps students understand their responsibilities when bringing electronic devices to school. If you have any questions, email Paul McIntyre at

The title of this article is truly an eye-catcher! When you see our school district referenced with the entire nation in terms of an award, we need to pause and take note! This particular honor deals with Advanced Placement course work taken by our high school students. And, it has a great story line with an implication that I believe puts our school district and community in position to be considered a global competitor. Let’s unravel this recent honor!
