Electronic databases provide a wealth of information for students and staff. Although they are accessed through the Internet, they should not be confused with web pages. Electronic databases are web versions of already printed materials. Simply, they are digital copies of magazines, newspapers, journals, pamphlets, and more.

INFOHIO - www.infohio.org

This is a collection of resources free to all of Ohio's K-12 students and teachers. Several of these resources are detailed below:

1. Encyclopedia Britannica - Here you can search through the standard encyclopedia, the student encyclopedia (for middle grades), and the elementary encyclopedia. The results include 100,000+ full text articles, 24,000+ biographies, 23,000+ illustrations, 1,000+ maps, 250+ animations, 2,600+ video clips, 150+ sound files, and 900+ tables and charts. They also provide an excellent collection of learning materials such as study guides, games, and activities for language arts, math, and science.
2. EBSCO Host - Here you have access to the following databases: Primary Search (K-6), Middle Search (4-10), Secondary Search (7-12), Professional Search (teachers and administrators), and TOPIC Search. In these you can search through over 6,000 magazines, newspapers, and other publications, with most articles in full-text form.
3. American National Biography - Includes over 18,000 biographies of people in American history with pictures and over 80,000 hyper-linked cross-references available.
4. SIRS Discoverer Deluxe – Here you have access to over 1,600 full-text articles and images, appropriate for grades 1 through 9. The site also includes Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedia World Almanac

INFOhio's Electronic Resources

In Ohio, every student in every school has access to the same core of up-to-date, resource information with which to complete homework and research assignments. INFOhio provides quality information right on the desktops of school, library and home computers to help students learn and teachers teach using the tools of the Information Age.

What does accessing INFOhio Electronic Resources cost you?

Absolutely nothing. The State Of Ohio funds INFOhio to purchase these online resources through June 2003. One statewide purchase provides for unlimited access to INFOhio Electronic Resources by ALL public and non-public K-12 schools, educators, students and their parents across Ohio.

How can students and parents access resources from home?

Students are encouraged to use all of these resources during school and at home with their parents via the Internet. For home use you must enter a username and password the first time you access any INFOhio Electronic Resources. Contact your building Library Media Specialist or Technology Support Specialist for this information. (Staff E-mail directories are available on each building's website.) North Canton City School employees with a valid Viking username and password may download a document with this information from the Technology Help Section of the NCCS website.
